When I worked in the lab on Tuesday, the tech in charge asked me what my favorite thing used to be to make in the pharmacy. I told her I used to love making suppositories. I really loved making them because they took a lot of steps. When you first start compounding, you make creams. And a lot of them. Creams then gels then capsules then all the other stuff. But yeah, did I mention I used to make a lot of creams? It’s exciting at first, but gets old quick. It’s been a while since I have done them at this point, so I would have been happy to make some. So the tech told me when she saw me on Wednesday that she was saving a suppository rx for me to make the next day, so I was excited. We didn’t make suppositories much at my old pharmacy (typically we only made a belladonna suppository), but when I made them in school, it all came back.
I can remember our first compounding competition in 2015. After making 2 awesome prescriptions, then having lunch, we were faced with our last prescription, which we knew was a suppository. I believe you only have an hour to make them in competition, but since you have to double cast them, it takes longer because they need to be poured, set, melted back down, then poured and set. I remember we were running out of time and labeling all of the things and filling out our compounding record when a pharmacist (who was also a judge), came up and started asking us some questions about our technique. We answered them, he gave us some advice, then shook our hands and congratulated us on 3 really awesome prescriptions. I don’t think we actually ended up wrapping our suppositories because we had ran out of time, but the judges at least got to see them. But that pharmacist I mentioned? Now my 1st APPE rotation preceptor. Full circle.
Anyway, so my day in the lab was basically filled with doing that suppository. It took a long time to melt and since I made almost 150, they took a long time to pour and set too. But when they came out...well, see the pic; they were fucking beautiful. Anyone should be happy to shove that thing up their hoo-ha. I am really feisty lately, not sure why. Deal with it. After that, I weighed out some more powders for capsules. Then I got home, cut some fabric, and went to bed.
Check out these beautiful suppositories! Patted myself on the back because these made me proud.
